How I became a better UX Researcher
My project management skills have grown a lot. Specifically, I have implemented three changes that help my teams do better work:
Build a great, trusting team culture… from the beginning (setting and revisiting our norms, breaking bread often, showing appreciation, creating a shared purpose and vision, celebrating our successes, allowing ourselves to try on new skills and roles, making sure every individual contributor feels valued and heard).
Use an agenda system (with familiar protocols for goal-setting, creating time structures, and clarifying next steps) and coach the team on how to use it, so it actually sticks and isn’t forgotten. I’ve learned this is actually a matter of equity and inclusivity in the workplace. Transparent meetings with clear goals, time structures, and next-steps allow everyone to pitch in.
Normalize giving and receiving feedback. Thanks to #1 and #2, this is something we can do without feeling ripped to shreds or even batting an eye. We all want to see each other grow, so we’ve been able to reach new depths of vulnerability, openness, and trust when we give and receive feedback.
